As you see in the slide, a lot of people think that technology makes life easier. And at some point it will be interesting to see whether or not our values as a society begin to change and incorporate that ultimately that will become a mark of authenticity. They associate millennials and. ROSENSTIEL: I would just add this, that in our study of new media and blogs and social media that the vast majority of links that people are referencing are not only legacy media but these high-prestige legacy media. WOODRUFF: Tom, bring this back to news and information and where it comes from. - DAN Institute How Do Millennials Like to Learn? And part of it is living down that past and proceeding with the future and creating a presence that is ongoing. In addition to receiving advice and feedback, millennials emphasize building rapport as well as pathways for frequent communication with their managers. And now that that force-feeding is changing, they are getting their cues about what to think about from many more places. Millennials have evolved and developed through this exponentially expanding digital world. I do know that teens certainly value transparency. And so the speed at which we can deliver that becomes even more important in that specific dynamic. For a trainer, they should remember to provide the rationale and reasoning behind regulations to help millennials to justify the rules and . They'd rather let machines do that hard stuff. TOM ROSENSTIEL: Im glad that Im the oldest person on this panel so that we have more points of view here. ROSENSTIEL: Right. To what extent do millennials enjoy learning, this is one response. Pew Research Center surveys conducted in the fall of 2018 (more than a year before the coronavirus outbreak) among Americans ages 13 and older found that, similar to Millennials, Gen Zers are progressive and pro-government, most see the country's growing racial and ethnic diversity as a good thing, and they're less likely than older generations . But somehow getting a phone call isnt? One of the most heartbreaking cases that I actually had to deal with in the fallout of this was a woman whose ex-husband was after her daughter. And it comes back to what the earlier panel was talking about, issues of a lot of fear. This creates some interesting elements, especially as it relates to education. You can only really do what the technology allows you to do. And you know, I tell you things; you might forget some of it. which I think is to Amandas point, is what are we allowed to take into account in our hiring decisions? (Laughter.) The millennial effect. And you see that both in how the media is covering it, how scholars are covering it . So first off, weve got a structured environment where theyre still trying to pass notes and gossip and joke around in interstitial spaces that are in person. Gen Y is tech-savvy. WOODRUFF: Can you give us a one-sentence definition of what each one of those is? Both millennials and Gen Z are more likely to flourish when working in modernized office spaces with natural light and plenty of perks. The Millennial generation has an entirely different consideration set for motivation, and given that they already comprise more of the workforce than GenXers and Baby Boomers, we need to invest. If you only focus on stories that are blockbusters, you may attract 30% [but] you drive people away because they dont find the things theyre interested in in there. While Millennials have been heavily criticized for their obsession with technology, they have been evolving as collaborators, multitaskers and consumers of complex information. They take command. But real-time [is] important because often times the content that is being published via these different mechanisms, whether its Facebook or Twitter or a whole host of different publishing platforms, is generally only useful or relevant for a small window of time. I think professionally and socially and personally, were having to deal with a level of information persistence, information searchability, information replicability, information scalability, that weve never seen before. They have come of age during a time of dramatic technological changes in our society. Students will be able to analyze information about societal changes during millennials' young adulthood and determine how the millennial generation differs from other generations. Videogames (laughter) law school. [They went] out of their way to create a Facebook with all of the privacy settings set down, brought in a tech guy to help. She hired a large number of "digital natives' - as Angela called them to do what they do best socializing through technology. And thats the calculation you make with these spaces. In one survey of 247 young (18-29), middle-aged (33-50), and older workers (51-84), people described the qualities that might be true of people in another age group (their stereotypes). By 2025, the millennial share of the workforce will rise . Radio, interestingly, is something that everybody uses and the numbers arent changing a lot over time. So young kids who are on the path to Harvard or Yale or want to be or their parents have wanted them to be since they were five, theyre going to make these calculations about all that they could possibly lose much earlier than kids who are not really thinking about college but are thinking about what it means to sort of get attention and get a job that was about publicity. Now, it may be an artificial need maybe a test tomorrow or it could be that youre suddenly on a sailing ship, youve never been sailing before, and youre going to have to learn to tie these knots because or youre on vacation, and suddenly the Mayans are interesting because youre there, and the ruins are in front of you. Who knew. Dont talk to strangers. BOYD: No, not only are they not able to, but Facebook keeps making it harder. Especially more privileged kids in the United States spend morning to night in activity to activity to activity to activity because their parents think that this is good for them. Millennials visit public libraries more regularly than other age groups. Theyre twice as likely to be [cell-only] as Gen-Xers and a lot more likely than others. And its amazing if you actually look at its like, OK, theres another fire, theres another cat caught in a tree, theres another I mean, its not always sort of hard news either. Watching YouTube videos on the train trip home from work demonstrates some efficient LinkedIn marketing and the crucial measures to bear in mind while utilizing LinkedIn to carry out ads for ones small business on the network itself. Its what your, you know, its what your parents are putting up about their kids. 1. While Gen X is a largely self-motivated generation, millennials seek constant inspiration and motivation. There are no longer controlled by the media, but the curiosity can be satisfied by the media. People of many different ages, even much younger than Millennials, became excited and became plugged in, became interested, used different channels of technology than had been used for politics before. So we developed products and now you can go to Google and you can search and just hit a play button. If we had a private conversation, and I told you not to tell anybody and then you spread it to the entire room, Id be really angry with you. The suicide rate for . Millennial employees can perform better in the intricately-connected modern world because theyre better able to sort through the deluge of facts and opinions that were all subjected to every day. LENHART: I should say that we are actually seeing some of these boundaries kind of erase over time. But one thing where they do jump out more is in the idea that its a good thing to share all these pictures, to post things about themselves, to say Im doing my laundry now while theyre on Facebook or whatever. And so one of the things thats really frustrating in all of this is that most people and Amandas data show this over and over again [want privacy]. Specifically my concern is that stories that are very newsworthy like, say, civil strife in the Congo get crowded out by stories that are popular. As a result, Millennials are the first generation to be self-identified as digital natives, at ease with and adept of utilizing technology to their advantage. WOODRUFF: But arent they now able to make it private much more easily than they used to? ROSENSTIEL: What we see and the behavior isnt drastically different by generation I think is that people are not focused on specific brands. Which would you prefer? What you consider to be the appetizer, I consider to be the meal. 5. Now, we get into where people get their news: Television this [includes] both cable and broadcast and local. Millennials' tech and global savvy will make them instrumental in shaping our mobile future worldwide. And what we actually see with a lot of technologies, particularly social and interactive technologies, theres kind of this hump that crosses over teens and Millennials. The same thing ends up operating with technology, which is that once young people have worked out what they think are the social norms of that particular space, when the technology changes the rules, young people get upset. The internet, clearly more. Most of you in the room, especially those with a political bent, are always thinking about everything you have to lose. BOYD: I would argue that actually this is changing for all people of all ages. MS.: I feel like our generation kind of has ADD in terms of you cant just sit down and you know, lets relax. Its what Dylan was saying too. In additional to seeking out constructive criticism and mentorship, this generation also appreciates positive feedback and recognition for a job well-done. Now, that said, you know, many of you have your BlackBerrys in your pocket. That means that 65% made their material public. Advanced technology is critical to the Millennial mindset; regardless of their surroundings or goals, Millennials perform at their best when outfitted with some sort of digital equipment. Or if I do, its a little bit of a blunt instrument. BOYD: Theres no doubt that when given a crowdsourcing decision-making, people will tend to consume things that are much more gossip-driven, things that are much more celebrity-driven, things that are much less, sort of, hard news. At DAN Institute, we make the process of choosing the right online course for millennials easier. I wonder if crowdsourcing breeds a certain complacency in terms of scouting out news. Companies must record their transitioning employees institutional knowledge and know about the study habits of millennials. And then two or 3 years later, we do that. Theyre watching television, actually a little more than Gen-Xers, but certainly less than older generations. Videogames or law school? To him, hes just looking for play buttons. I was trying to take the Millennials quiz on my phone earlier, but I dont really know how to work the thing. Its all about numbers. Like, what do you mean you dont have a Facebook profile? Its given that learners can no longer learn anything solely through text. What happens in a social media landscape is an inversion of that. Or are those the 40 songs that the record labels want to promote the most? The news was bundled by editors or producers at a newscast or newspaper or a radio station, and you had some limited choices if you were reading the newspaper, which sections you were going to look at and which stories youd read. Theyre there connecting with the people that they already know or the people they desperately wish to know i.e., celebrities. And that if youre just interacting with this person in another medium, the way they may be showing themselves to you would be very different. And I think that as they become news consumers, they will begin to become very discriminating about whether that information has value to them. The Millennials are now the largest generation in the U.S. workforce (Pew Research Center), sales businesses must develop new tactics to educate their Millennial employees that differ from those used with Baby Boomers or even Gen Xers in the past. Overanalyzing might not be necessary. Because they are so concerned with achieving their goals, they actively seek comments that will assist them in doing so. [O]ver and over again, I spend time in schools where teachers are like, anything in The New York Times is right; anything in Wikipedia is wrong. This new generation of learners must be engaged, which means learning about them and tailoring our courses to their needs. It is obvious to them that they must continue to learn in order to progress in both their personal and professional life. He understands and appreciates how millennials process information, as well as everything the older generations bring to the table. OK, you know? If the revenue becomes very attached to the specific content, its not clear how were going to subsidize the coverage of civic news that may not have a broad interest. Conversations boil down to, you know, joking around, gossiping, flirting, you know, so sharing information about that was going on around you. One of the things Im kind of entertained by is that in most of my interviews lately, Ive been reminded that Facebook is for old people because whats fun about hanging out with your parents if theyre reminiscing about their own high school experiences? And so that whole process from thinking about it to product launch involves a lot of thought around how people are using technology, what kind of information and feedback do we get. The way I act to my mother is different than the way I act to Lee Rainie, my boss, and the way I act to danah boyd. Instead of trying to fit Millennials into other generational molds, we need to celebrate and apply their strengths. MS.: I get New York Times delivered daily on email, so I check I usually do the internet news. Millennials tend to learn by carrying out a hands-on task and finding knowledge through that process. And I actually think the latter is what young people are much more concerned about than the former. In 2020, the millennial population age range is 24 - 39. Like, if I say, oh, the traffic on I-95 is really horrible right now, like, nobody cares that I said that a week ago, but you might care if I said that five minutes ago or a second ago or an hour ago. The following principles can guide banks' steps to improve customer engagement and drive next-generation growth, one millennial at a time: Customers are thinking about their needs, not necessarily your products. What about gender and technology? The first computer was created in the 1940s, but it wasnt until the mid-1990sduring millennial childhoodthat computers became widely available to the general public. If youre a journalist, you might have written a newspaper article that might have gone into microfilms in some library off there now this is easy to pull back, the thing you wrote 10 years ago that was kind of embarrassing. Digitize Your Hiring Process. This deeply affects how do millennials like to learn. But because of various locational and geographic constraints, they go to the cell phone, they go to text messaging and social networks as a default as a way to expand upon that. WOODRUFF: Dylan Casey, what would you add to all this, and then bring us gently into your world, your focus at Google, on search and how thats characterizing this generation. BOYD: I also think its absolutely critical that we highlight that there are huge variations across socioeconomic and racial lines in all of this, and I think that often when we talk about a generation, we obscure the fact that this is really, really significant, and its often in unexpected ways. They may have been sort of engaged with it and then still enjoyed it, but it was different. Answer: anyone who understands that "millennial" means someone born between the early 1980s and the late 1990s, as opposed to being shorthand for "silly person younger than me who has views I don't like", as it is often used. Once we get into the young adults, theyre definitely interacting with people, and what you hear over and over again from teenagers is when I ask them like why do you spend all this time online? But the technology is not making it easy. As an older Millennial and I hate that term, by the way dont you dare call me an older Millennial (laughter) when I went to apply for a job, I was sitting down at an interview, and the interviewer had a picture of me and my husband and our newborn daughter. For instance, Im 27. As a result, theyre no longer dependant on the information they used to be. [I]ts much more, sort of, social, personal upkeep coming out of the girls. But having different curators, I think, allows us to get different windows and yet still get the kind of customized information were looking for. So you and I might be having this conversation as friends in the schoolyard, talking back and forth. What I have gained personally from being public has been tremendous. According to Raddon, around 75% of credit union deposits belong . So its all of us coming together, using this technology. There are at least four generations now in the workplace: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z. So Ill write that Im bored publicly not because Im announcing it to all people across all space and all time but because I would love to find somebody else who is bored amongst my friend group who wants to chat with me. Millennials are more likely to be on social networks, to use cell and text, but I suspect that the rest of us are following them in that regard. Giving points, badges, and levels can be a game-like method. Definitely getting together in person. As a result, learning and development teams must ensure that learning is responsive to the constantly changing demands of this population. They have a different way of thinking and learning than Baby Boomers did. Fear has been unbelievably pervasive in what weve seen with teenagers, and its continued on into young adults such that a lot of teenagers that I went and interviewed, they werent allowed to leave their home, right? So some of the data that we can look at in other areas about religious attitudes, about morality, about a host of other things that we can do longitudinally, we cant do when it comes to media use. How Millennials Interact With and Consume Content. The old saying goes knowledge is power, but we have information coming out of our ears and puddling on the floor. Keep in mind while thinking on the topic of millennials and learning. Generation Y is the first generation to grow up with the internet, cell phones and digital communication. Millennials, with their love of technology and in particular social networks, are accustomed to getting input quickly (think: likes, retweets, etc.). Millennials, sometimes known as Generation Y, is a demographic cohort that follows Generation X and proceeds Generation Z. Millennials were born between 1981 and 1996, according to the Pew Research Center. and these Michael Jackson kinds of stories, you eventually drive out the people who wanted to get information about this subject, this subject, this subject and this subject. What Facebook presents to you [are] much shorter status updates. Gaming is the other point where young men are much more likely to both own the hardware to game and then to play games and to do so for longer. 61% use social to communicate with family, friends and acquaintances. Is there any implication for eLearning creators here? Chris is able to see all sides of the question and offer his trademark insight into the realities of the issue. Who knows? Young people care deeply about privacy but how they actually think through privacy looks very different than older folks. How do the two genders use it? Now that they have a delivery system that meets their behavior, their needs, their personality, theyre avid consumers. They would rather learn something quickly with bite-sized content than sit through extended classes. 1. And you really still are constrained in the way that youre using technology. Whether appearing as a guest or panelist on a talk show, or as leadership speaker at a corporate event, hes able to act as a bridge between generations. The number of millennials in the workforce is only going to rise in the coming years. WOODRUFF: I have to ask you because its been raised to me by a number of people. The other thing, and this is significant the landscape is so different that actually asking Millennials or any other generation what their media use is like versus what previous generations did is impossible to do because tweeting and a lot of these technologies didnt exist. ROSENSTIEL: I think they respect Googles judgment about whats a news source. Like the BBC is enormously significant. Crime and public safety, chosen by 13% of respondents. The survey indicates that 87 percent of Millennials say that benefits are extremely important in choosing to join an employer, and 86 percent say that benefits strongly influences their decision. ROSENSTIEL: Its a very complicated issue. Contrary to popular perceptions, content marketing is an extremely intricate process involving several working parts. And theyre really thinking through, you know, what are the social elements there. Its going to be to the 21st century what film was to the 20th century. Were seeing a lot more persistence of data today, and I say that even for those of us who were speaking out in public. The millennial generation generally includes people born between 1981 and 1996. Your juvenile records can be sealed if you commit a crime or engage in some kind of activity when youre under 18, that doesnt actually that doesnt count when youre an adult and thats partly because weve decided that young adults and people under the age of 18 at least dont have the same kind of judgment that you do when youre older. Another big component is over-structured time. Its all directions. So maybe its more of that reflective technology going on. Q: Linda Wertheimer, NPR. LENHART: We dont have a lot of data about teens assessment of credibility. In this article, we helped you discover how do millennials learn. And this is a perfectly reasonable way in which we have regular conversations. Qualitatively, when I start to when I start to actually track whats going on in terms of their status updates and the content that theyre producing, there are differences. Is A consultant we interviewed a few years ago for this project said her most memorable comment from, I think, a young teen was, I dont have to go looking for the news when something is important, Ill hear about it . I hear it every single day in one manner or another that speed matters. BOYD: When I was looking at creation profile creation I was delighted to find that a lot of the guys had their profile first created by a girlfriend who had basically dragged them in kicking and screaming. But what were not getting is that hes doing that to be authentic in his friend group. But are the millennials really wasting their time? But young women are the most intense users of technologies that connect you to others and that are expressive. Is there much of a different between having The New York Times brand on there and having a blog post? The most effective way to keep learners motivated to improve their skills is to provide regular, timely feedback. Our news homepage, for example, gets far less page views than an actual news results page. December rolls around. Heres just a minutes worth of what we heard. And so hes being shaped by technology, and then in turn, hes shaping the way that we develop products. If you go into a room and say, whens the last time you learned something new, people will tell you about a situation that they were in where they actually had a need to learn this stuff. But let us note that this is also a point of absolute privilege. Quiz: How Millennial Are You? One of the things that most distinguishes them some say defines them is technology. We anonymize it, but we look at it at the aggregate level. [Y]young people were not interested in the old delivery systems, in appointment viewing, in having to consume your news at breakfast only thats what was going on. So Im not Im not convinced that this is entirely new. It was a big part of the MySpace culture. BOYD: But lets also remember that this is not just what you individually choose to put up there; its what your kids have chosen to put up there about you. And heres what I think is actually critical about Wikipedia, which becomes essential for thinking about these kinds of things, which is that every single edit on Wikipedia is publicly documented, which means that you can actually see the history and the biases of all of these people and all of the changes as this article got battled out to make. This is why online learning is growing rapidly as Millennials become older. There could be a real cost to businesses for any communication errors. Here's how to run a meeting the right way. It was at the top of your profile. Everything was suddenly public. When somebody walks into the room, we most likely can read their gender and their race, but we are not allowed to take these into account in a hiring decision. Its not saying that texting is always preferred, but it becomes an inverted social norm which is this is a lighter-touch way of checking in before Ive actually locally interrupted you. Millennials spend about 18 hours a day consuming online media. I mean, I spend I always watch the local news whenever I am in a new city. One of the things we think is a cause of this is changes in the use of social networks. But youre still using the technology as its presented in front of you. The other thing we have to sort of take into account in all of this is what kind of environment theyre living in and the kinds of ways in which they interact socially. And so we said, OK, we need to figure out how to address that. One reason is because I think Millennials are already changing because the technologys changing, because their personalities are changing. Q: One of the findings was about the way that this generation is more sympathetic to institutions. And we need to take that into account. If you dont know something you can look it up in a matter of seconds. Were you an adolescent ever? The "Shark Tank" star appeared on FOX Business' "The Claman Countdown" this week. And so a lot of the behaviors that you saw, especially with teenagers look like what the teenagers were doing whenever we were hanging out before. Christopher McMullen was 18 when Barack Obama was elected as the first black president of the U.S., but that iconic campaign slogan and the movement that resulted from the historic . I referenced music a lot because its something that weve spent a lot of time thinking about. [5] This shortage threatens to become long term if credit unions don't attract more members of the millennial and Gen Z generations. And so we do hear teenagers talk a lot about this and young adults talking about this like, yeah, I write that Im bored but, you know, whos going to really pay attention unless they want to talk back to me? Judith E. Glaser Closed-in, artificially lit work environments do not appeal to either generation. We didnt have tweeting then. The real wisdom of the modern age isnt knowing how to gain knowledge, its knowing what to ignore. Lets gather in these places. JUDY WOODRUFF: I want to welcome you back to the second of three panel discussions were doing today centered on new surveys and analysis by the Pew Research Center on the Millennials, the generation of teens and twenty-somethings who, as we know, are turning out to be distinctly different from the younger generations that preceded them. At a conference at the Newseum in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, Pew Research Center analysts and outside experts discussed research findings about the Millennial generation, the American teens and twenty-somethings now making the passage into adulthood. which is ridiculous. And there are these spikes. Some of it, you thought was really interesting and you decided to share with the room.
