Buck Pond RV camping is almost resort-like in some respects, despite its rustic setting; many of the campsites are secluded amongst trees and offer pristine quiet while still being just a stone's throw from the water, where you'll find a private beach for the campground's guests. High Peaks Wilderness is an outdoor recreational area spread over three different counties (Essex, Franklin, and Hamilton) and located south of Saranac Lake. The second flat section is less fun as it has those quintessential Adirondack cross a muddy swamp by walking on fallen tree trunks sections. Rainbow Lake (588 acres) is 2.75 miles long. Pets are welcome at every site, and there's a camp store on the park grounds where you can even rent bicycles. This is a catch and release only water for brook trout. A lean-to is located near the end of the trail with a view of the pond. Hays Brook Horse Trail leaves the Hays Brook Trail 0.9 mile from the trailhead and extends 0.9 mile to the Sheep Meadow Trail, providing for a 3.4-mile loop hike. Once you get to mile 3 it does level out for a while, but it very muddy. The reroute is rougher and wetter than the regular trail and passes debris from previous logging operations. We were on the summit with just a few other people. There are numerous water bodies in the Wild Forest, the largest of which are the 1,185-acre Meacham Lake, the 588-acre Rainbow Lake, the 508-acre Osgood Pond, the 377-acre Lake Kushaqua, and the 86-acre Debar Pond. The length and steep ascent and descent on this trail make it difficult, but the rock scrambles are minor compared to some of the other ADK high peak summits. Water proof boots are a must and good grip. Buck Creek State Park Campground has 88 electric sites and 22 non-electric sites. Bigger rigs often sleep 6-10, some even 12! The last portion of the trail is steep, climbing 800 feet in the 0.5 mile to the summit. Skiff Pond Trail extends 2.8 miles from the eastern Debar Trailhead and reconnects with the Debar Trail approximately 2.3 miles west of the trailhead.
